Janyre Tromp is a historical novelist whose loves spinning tales that, at their core, hunt for beauty, even when it isn’t pretty. She’s the author of Shadows in the Mind’s Eye and coauthor of It’s a Wonderful Christmas.
She’s also a book editor, published children’s book author, and lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her family, two crazy cats, and a slightly eccentric Shetland Sheepdog. And if you ever meet in person, you pronounce that first name Jan-ear.
You can find her on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and her website,www.JanyreTromp.com (where you can grab a free copy of her novella Wide Open).
My Review: 4.5/5 Stars Kudos to Janyre Tromp in writing an excellent story filled with mystery, suspicion, forgiveness, healing and a love that must overcome enormous obstacles. Telling the story from two first person perspectives within a story is masterfully done. It provides depth in portraying the emotions of returning war veteran, Sam Mattas, who is broken both in body and mind. The rich characterization of Charlotte Ann (Annie) and Dovie May (Sam’s mother) show the emotion these women have endured while Sam was away fighting and the acclimation of his return. Watching Annie struggle to help Sam return to a normal life while accepting and loving him through his erratic behavior gave me insight into the amazing woman she was. She was much stronger than she imagined. Dovie May was the matriarch of the family who had such wisdom for her children. “Sides, there ain’t no growth without darkness.” “Your sins will find you out” gave new meaning to the story and provided some plot twists and mystery in the story that totally surprised me. I highly recommend this amazing book and look forward to more books by the author. I received a copy of the book from the publisher through Read with Audra. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
