Review:

Demi never loses hope that her father will return home, but it has been twenty years and very few clues point to what might have happened to him. Until one day she finds a clue that leads her and her new friend, Liam, and his twin sister to the Ives Mystery House. With codes, secret rooms, and perilous booby traps I was interested in seeing what would happen next. I was also wondering how they were going to escape the mad woman who lived there and controlled their destiny.

If you enjoy learning a bit of the history of some of the codes and how they work, you'll enjoy this suspense-filled story. Liam's faith was evident throughout the story, which helped Demi resolve some of the things from her past and seek reconciliation.

The Book I Almost Gave Up On

When I turned in the first full draft of The Escape Game last September, I hated it.

Not in a playful, self-deprecating way. I really, truly hated it.

I had that awful, hollow feeling in my stomach. The one that whispers, This isn’t good enough. You aren’t good enough. Why did you ever think you could pull this off?

Honestly, I believed this book was beyond my abilities.

And it was.

But I forgot I have Someone on my side who can do all things.

Back in 2022, this story idea was supposed to be simple. A shorter novel inside a collection. I had a fun premise, a few intriguing characters, and a basic plot: a second chance romance with the two main characters locked in a deadly mansion.

Easy peasy, right?

Wrong.

I realized the story needed space to breathe, so I wrote something else for the collection, and put this story back on the shelf until the right time.

Fast forward to 2025. The Escape Game was proposed as book 2 of The Game Master series.

I started writing. Characters pushed back. They wouldn’t talk. Inside my head, there was silence.

Some books flow. This one fought.

I wrestled with tone and pacing. I rewrote entire sections only to delete them again. Scenes that sparkled in my head fell flat on the page. I second-guessed everything.

My heroine was supposed to be the faithful Christian girl who wins the bad boy to the Lord.

She wasn’t.

And my hero? He was all wrong.

So, I did something terrifying.

I replaced him.

Completely.

I created an entirely new character—Liam Shepherd.

On the surface, Liam was perfect—kind, protective, devoted to the Lord, close to his family. Every Christian girl’s dream.

But fiction doesn’t work that way. Perfection isn’t compelling.

I asked God to show me Liam’s wound.

When it came, I cried.

No, I bawled like a baby.

Liam wasn’t abused. He didn’t come from a broken home. He had love and stability. Then tragedy struck, and he faced a choice.

He chose wrong.

And it haunted him.

But the troubles were far from over.

This wasn’t just a tricky plot or a stubborn manuscript.

This story touched some deep places in my own heart—places I didn’t expect to have to revisit. Writing it meant digging into tender, uncomfortable emotions, facing truths about fear, grief, and courage that I hadn’t fully confronted. It hit a little too close to home.

Some days it felt less like writing fiction and more like surgery.

And surgery is exhausting.

By the time I reached the end, I wasn’t excited. I was just tired. I turned it in because it was due, not because it felt finished.

Then the editing began.

If drafting this book was wandering through a dark forest, editing was finally being handed a flashlight. Sentences tightened. Motivations clarified. Scenes I thought were essential were cut, and others grew stronger. What felt hopeless started to feel possible.

Slowly—painfully at times—the story started to come into focus.

My editor asked hard questions. I rewrote the entire book. (Not completely, but it felt like it.)

Each round of edits chipped away at the parts I disliked and revealed the story underneath—the one I’d been trying to tell all along.

Somewhere along the way, something unexpected happened.

I stopped hating it.

More than that, I started to like it.

Everything clicked. The story finally had the depth—and the heart—it had been missing.

And now, sitting on the other side of the process, I can honestly say something I never imagined saying last fall:

I’m proud of The Escape Game.

Not because it’s perfect—no book ever is—but because it represents persistence. Growth. The courage to dig into hard places and stay long enough to find the heart of the story.

And that heart is what I hope you feel when you read it.

What started as a small, simple idea grew into something deeper than I expected. Something that required more from me than I thought I had to give.

And in the end, it became something God and I built together.

This book reminded me of something important:

We’re all first drafts.

God is shaping us, molding us … and we fight back. We look at our lives and wish things were different. We replay our wrong choices. We feel regret, frustration, and fear.

Sometimes, we even hate what we see.

But hating your draft doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” Philippians 1:6 (KJV)

It just means God isn’t finished yet.

And sometimes, the stories we struggle with the most end up being the ones we’re proudest to hold in our hands.

Review:

I love this series! I read the books several years ago, so it was a delight to get to read them again. They are even better the second time around! There are spies, heroes, and a maniacal villain who makes me shiver and read as fast as I can to see what other things he is planning.

Archer- Lady Laura Wynwood is an intelligent widow who is compassionate and takes in those who are in need. She has in her employ twin 11 year olds who are expert knife throwers with other street-wise talents. Her niece, Phoebe, comes to stay with her and is quite good at observing others as well as being an expert archer and is an avid botanist. I loved seeing these four team up with Sol Drydale and his two compatriots, Micahel Coulton-Jones and Septimus Ackett as they gather evidence of a secret society and unmasking Apothecary Jack and his potent formula to make people have superhuman strength.

Berserker- Wow! This second book in the series had me on the edge of my seat. Apothecary Jack is truly a mad and ruthless villain. He doesn't care who he hurts and delights in watching people suffer. Ms. Elliott has created a creepy, despicable and dangerous threat. Lady Wynwood, Sol Drydale and their team have their work cut out for them as they try to stop him and his super strength men.

There is enough action, suspense, questions, and chaos in this book that I couldn't put it down. The end of the book is a cliff hanger, so plan on buying the next book too! I can't wait to see how this clever and resourceful ring of spies is going to meet the threat of the Root and its use for defeating anyone who stands in Apothecary Jack's way.

Aggressor- The adventure continues in this third book of Lady Wynwood's Spies. Apothecary Jack has competition with the French as they fight over who will have control over the Root. Two of the Crown's agents are affected by this strange and powerful potion, and another of the agents is badly injured by men who are part of Apothecary Jack's crew.

I love how the young ladies and the 11 year old twins are called on to help. Each has their own skill set and each help to thwart the villainous plans that have been set into motion. I particularly loved how the bows and arrows played a key part in the confrontations of the men who affected by the Root. This was a clever and unique way of handling a dangerous situation.

While some things are made clearer, other questions are brought up that makes me excited to read the next book. This is part of a series and is not a standalone book. if you love adventure, spies, and a bit of romance, you will like this series.

What inspired me to write the Lady Wynwood’s Spies series:

While I love Regency Romances and Jane Austen’s books, I also really love action movies. When plotting the rest of the series, especially in light of Sol’s clandestine job for the Crown, I realized that I really wanted to do a mash-up of Mission: Impossible in the Regency era.

So I created Sol’s team of agents, some who used to work for the Foreign Office as spies and some who are civilians with unusual skill sets. And, of course, there will be lots of romance for each of the team members, as well as lots of action and suspense.

What exactly is an epic-length serial novel?

Originally I had written The Spinster’s Christmas, a Christian Regency Romantic Suspense, as a stand-alone novel, and I had planned more stand-alone novels with Lady Wynwood and Sol as minor characters in each of them. However, as I began planning the series past that first Christmas book, I realized the storyline was becoming longer and more complex.

I fought it for a while because it would have been a really long series—I even tried writing the next book as a stand-alone novel, but I wrote almost 90,000 words and I hadn’t even gotten to the 25% mark in the book!

So I decided to structure the series like a Japanese light novel series, in which each book has a complete story arc, but there is an underlying story arc that runs through each of the volumes and isn’t resolved until the end.

This is similar to the serial novels being published in the U.S., but those tend to be smaller installments of around 20,000 words, while each of the volumes in my series is around 100,000 words.

I have already plotted the entire series and it will be 12 volumes, plus 3 prequel novels (The Spinster’s Christmas, The Gentleman Thief, and Lissa and the Spy). At the moment, I’m writing volume 10.

Review:

No one can really compare to Jaime Jo Wright when it comes to Gothic dual time novels. Once again she has created two stories that intertwine and leave me wondering, “How does she do it?”. I enjoyed the mystery and was quite pleased with myself in determining who the villains were in each story. There is a faith thread in which the characters must determine where God is in their story, which I thought was very good.

Review:

There are a string of burglaries that have Mira and Byron on the case, and this time, this one is personal. Byron’s family has had family jewels stolen, and the evidence points to an insider, but who would that be? I loved the mystery, danger, and the clues that keep you engaged until the final page.

Mira Blayse is like no other lady since she is independent, analytical, and makes a great partner for Ambrose Sherard aka the detective, Byron Constantine. There were some tense moments and even confrontations with certain members of Byron’s family, but I loved how things weren’t all they seemed to be and Mrs. Sherard is now one of my new favorites in the series. The villains are still making plans and Circe is continuing to go forward with their acts of chaos, but Byron and Mira, along with the help of others will ever be striving to bring them down. I hope there will be another book in the Constantine Capers series that I have thoroughly enjoyed. If you like political intrigue, mysteries, and a bit of romance, I highly recommend reading this book and all of the others. In order to understand all of the details of relationships and things that are mentioned from past books, it would be beneficial for you to begin with the first book and read in order. I received a gifted copy from the author through Book Sirens. I was under no obligation to write a positive review.

Review:

Ms. Griep has written a romantic Regency story with a twist that was unique and interesting. As a poacher, Juliet Finch lives in a state of catching just enough game to survive, and not wanting to rely on this for her and her aunt’s existence. When she finally got caught by Lord Henry Russell, whose land she was hunting upon, she faces the real possibility of either death or deportation. Surprisingly, Henry offers her a different option of using her stealthiness and observations skills to find the person who sends his sister, Charity, threatening messages. Taking this golden opportunity she determines to do everything she can to apprehend the culprit. With red herrings and clues along the way, I was invested to see if I could solve the case too. I loved the twists of justice, the faith the characters, and the relationship that grows between Juliet and Henry..

If you are a fan of historical romance this is a book to add to your TBR list. After the story the author has included interesting information pertaining to history to further the knowledge of certain things that were included in the novel.

The Waltz: The Dance That Shocked Regency England

I’ll be the first to admit it…I can’t dance a lick. Not a jig, not a reel, and certainly not anything that requires turning in rhythm without stepping on someone’s toes. If you ever spot me on a dancefloor, it’s because someone shoved me there or I lost a bet. Which is probably why the waltz both fascinates and terrifies me. A dance that actually expects you to glide gracefully while holding someone close? Absolutely not. And yet in Regency England, it became the talk of the town.

When the waltz swirled onto the dancefloors of England in the 1790s, it caused more shock than delight. Imported from Austria and southern Germany, it was a turning, closely-held dance—far too close for the comfort of polite society. Many called it indecent, warning that no respectable couple should stand chest-to-chest before a room full of onlookers. Some critics even claimed the dance “ignited dangerous feelings” and threatened to erode proper English restraint.

Shocking, right?

But fashions shift, and all it took was the Prince Regent giving the dance his approval in 1814. Overnight, the waltz transformed from scandal to sensation. By the 1820s, it was everywhere.

Here are a few fun bits of waltz trivia from the era:
• Some etiquette books warned that too much turning could cause “disorientation” or “undue excitement.”
• Early chaperones sometimes counted the number of turns, convinced it reflected a couple’s level of impropriety.
• A lady’s hemline was said to act like a “barometer” of a gentleman’s behavior—if it swayed too wildly, he was holding her too tightly.

In The Bird of Bedford Manor, set in 1820, this same world of rigid rules and whispered scandals forms the backdrop for Juliet Finch—resourceful, determined, and driven into the woods by her father’s downfall. When Henry Russell catches her poaching on his land, everything changes. What begins as a crime punishable by death becomes something far more dangerous as he charges her with tracking the stalker tormenting his sister.
