My Review: 

Vivienne Poppy and her maid are on the run from her arranged marriage to a creepy, yet determined suitor. She doesn’t know what the future will hold, but she surely didn’t expect to be abducted from her stagecoach. What transpires is quite funny and had me looking forward to seeing how things were going to work out.

Sebastian Larkby had a dangerous undercover job as Yeoman of the Guard for the Prince Regent. He had to use whatever means necessary to protect him both physically and politically. He proves himself several times why he was given that position and why he is a knight in the British realm.

At first, he proposed a marriage in name only with Vivienne. It was fun to see his friends support him in ways to woo her when he realized he loved her. I have to say that some of the ideas were terrific.

This is the second book in the Best Laid Plans series. I have enjoyed both books immensely and can’t wait to read the next one! If you are looking for a book that you can easily recommend to a teenager or your mother, this is the book/ series for you.

Inspiration can strike in the most unexpected places—like a gift shop in Grand Teton National Park. While browsing, I struck up a conversation with a college student who had never set foot outside Alabama until her mom dropped her off for a summer job in the park. One minute, she was home in the Deep South; the next, she was surrounded by towering peaks and moose crossings. Talk about a culture shock.

That conversation lit a spark that eventually became my National Parks Summers series. I couldn’t stop thinking about the fascinating mix of people who work seasonally in national parks. You’ve got fresh-faced college kids on their first big adventure, retirees finally living their bucket-list dreams, and everyone in between. These parks aren’t just natural wonders—they’re crossroads for people from all walks of life, all chasing something unique.

In Capture the Moment, I wanted to explore what happens when people and landscapes collide. Kate Cunningham, a determined zoo photographer, swaps enclosures for the wilds of Grand Teton, chasing an elusive bear and her own sense of purpose. Along the way, Kate meets Grant Cooper, a rugged park ranger with a knack for tracking and a talent for keeping her on her toes.

My Review: 

Kate is visiting and searching in the Grand Teton Mountains for that once in a lifetime opportunity to shoot the perfect picture of a famous female grizzly. If she can get it she has a chance of National Geographic using it in their magazine. Kate has a lot to learn when it comes to nature photography, and finds herself in humorous and sometimes dangerous situations when she has some mishaps. I was proud of her when she decides to use her mistakes to improve her photography and ignore the taunting of competitive, back-biting fellow photographers.

Coop has a no nonsense attitude when it comes to people. I think he prefers animals instead and does everything he can to keep the bears (and people) safe at the park. I love that he is able to bring out the passion Frankie has for nature and to see beyond his surly attitude to the potential he has within himself.

Maisie and Frankie are an unlikely pair of teenagers to become involved in Kate and Coop’s lives. But, circumstances being what they are, they become sidekicks in helping to track the elusive bear. They are a great side to seeing things from a different perspective, and I am glad they were part of the story.

 My Review: 

Spoiled and self-centered Catherine McKenna is in for a rude awakening when she realizes that she is a triplet. the great thing is that as she travels to find her sisters, her life is transformed. She begins to hear and see how different her siblings’ lives were from her and how blessed she was to grow up with her father. I was happy to see that she learned to empathize with her sisters and more importantly, her father. 

Colin Elliot is battling with events from his past and is not thrilled when he is tasked with protecting Catherine, “the ice princess”. I liked how he slowly changed his opinion of her. I also was happy to to him find peace and reconcile his feelings through his faith. 

This is the third book in the McKenna Sisters series and can be read as a standalone. I didn’t read the other books and had no problem following the plot. I think it would be interesting learning about Margaret and Mary’s stories too.

I have walked with the Lord for most of my 82 years. He has been with me through hard times and wonderfully blessed times. We learn and grow in Him more in the valleys than on the mountaintops. That’s why I write books that show how much He loves. We can’t understand the depths of His love for us unless we need Him desperately.  My Review: 

We have always known there are the states of Virginia and West Virginia, but I didn’t realize that the division occurred during the Civil War era. I appreciated the historical details and diligence to giving fresh eyes to the characters that could have fought in the war. We see Fin having to make difficult calls as he must secure the lands near his home for the Union, while some of his neighbors were fighting for the Confederacy. 

I enjoyed seeing the romance between Fin and Melinda Jane. The couple had a hard time not assuming the feelings and thoughts of the other person, but they eventually worked it out. I felt that their romance brought hope to the story.

This is the second book in the series, and there are some unanswered questions that I feel will be addressed in hte next story. You can read it as a standalone, but you will want to read the next book to see how things turn out.

Research and writing are so much fun! I always have some kind of theme in mind for every book I write. In keeping with my brand, Heart of History, I am turning two history pockets inside out with this second story of the “West Virginia: Born of Rebellion’s Storm” series. When Heaven Thunders is the eldest Dabney sibling’s story and brings two factors to light that are not commonly known about the Civil War.

First, Fin, the hero, faces various moral dilemmas just trying to carry out orders. He witnesses historically accurate atrocities and unfair tactics perpetrated by both Union and Confederate commanders and soldiers. Fin is in the thick of rooting out bushwhackers and guerillas who bring the battle to not just the soldiers, but to civilian homes and families, including his own.

Fin is a moralist, working desperately to find a way to do the right thing even when all his choices seem so very wrong. Can you imagine meeting your best friend on the battlefield and he’s the enemy? I tried to wrap my mind around the idea of neighbor against neighbor and lawless vigilantes molesting plain folks in the name of a cause. “We are in a war, yes, but it needn’t strip a man of his humanity or God’s favor.” (Col. Joseph Lightburn, Fin’s commander)

Secondly, Melinda Jane, the feisty family friend (who definitely wants to be more than Fin’s friend) represents another little-known pocket from history. I took a bit of my own heritage to heart for her background. For most of my life, I definitely resembled my kin of Irish ancestry. However, like Melinda Jane, I have Native American and African American genes also. We don’t think much about mixed race nowadays—it’s the fabric of our wonderful country! Unfortunately, many folks were not as accepting during the Civil War period. At that time, a variety of ethnicities were actually enslaved, which we seldom see represented in Civil War movies and stories.

My second main character’s “secret” lends to her heart of gold and a compassionate nature that shines through everything she does. “Izzy taught me we’re all born into bondage. It matters not a whit what color a man’s skin is or the color of his horse or house—we’re all in shackles and only Master Jesus holds the key.” (Melinda Jane)

Oh boy, did I enjoy working with Fin and Melinda Jane—and watching sparks fly! I hope they’ll make you smile as well.

A Lesson in Propriety

My Review: 

When Drusilla is dumped by her fiancé and has to move to Chicago in order to take care of her family, she is probably at her lowest. But, she is a courageous and resourceful young woman who has a brilliant idea to convert the house that her aunt left her into a school for young ladies. Little does she realize the mishaps she will find herself encountering, but also being rescued and helped countless times by the handsome Rhenick Wittenbecker who helps her to see the remarkable young she truly is.

Author Jen Turano uses humorous situations to keep you turning the pages. A Lesson in Propriety is a prime example of hilarity with attack ferrets, eccentric friends, and a “haunted castle” that is filled with rampaging goats, a goose, and aggressive suits of armor that swings weaponry at Drusilla and her family.

This is the first book in the Merriweather Academy for Young Ladies, and you will want to read the next book since the school is getting ready to open. I look forward to reading what antics the students will be involved in throughout the series.
